A recent study by Chapman et al examined the variables associated with inhaler choice in primary practice for COPD patients.
The authors provided an interpretation of the recently issued ACCP / ACAAI review on device selection and proposed the following checklist to guide inhaler selection in primary care:
Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) are available in a wide range of drug formulations. The AeroChamber MAX* valved holding chamber (VHC) can be used with all commonly prescribed pMDIs and is the first transparent anti-static VHC on the market, designed specifically for use with the new environmentally friendly HFA pMDI formulations.
The revolutionary AeroChamber MAX* VHC features the Flow-Vu* inspiratory flow indicator, designed to provide maximum caregiver assurance of proper inhaler technique, assisting in the coordination of actuation with inhalation.
The AeroChamber* brand of VHCs are the most recommended by Canadian Pharmacists according to the results of a national pharmacy survey. 2 In addition, a UK study of asthma sufferers and parents of children with asthma found the AeroChamber* brand of VHCs to be "easy to use, easy to learn and most preferred".3
The AeroChamber MAX* VHC has the best reimbursement coverage of any VHC in Canada. Reimbursement is provided under all federal plans and in all provinces with the exception of Ontario, BC and PEI. Alternately, most private payer plans provide coverage for the AeroChamber MAX* VHC.
Recommend an AeroChamber MAX* VHC for use with pMDI aerosol medications for COPD patients.
