For countless individuals worldwide, dealing with asthma or COPD, keeping symptoms in check involves being prepared for any scenario, be it a stroll in the park, a day at work, or a spontaneous weekend escape.

Trish's Story

Trish Carter, a 46-year-old mother of two and former Ontario resident, is now living out her dream on a quiet ocean-side farm in Prince Edward Island. She’s lived with asthma since her early twenties. “At first, I honestly didn’t know what was going on,” she recalls. “I had this cough that wouldn’t go away and I kept getting winded. A doctor eventually told me it was asthma and gave me an inhaler.”

Since then, Trish has rarely been without it. Whether she was sitting on the bench during competitive hockey games or clipping it to her harness on a climb, her inhaler was always close by. Staying active was important to her, but her asthma often made things harder than they needed to be.

She’s far from alone. Many people face similar obstacles — and most don’t realize they aren’t using their inhalers correctly. Trish didn’t either. She didn’t know there were tools and techniques that could have made a big difference in how she managed her symptoms.

Exploring Better Options

One option that can make a meaningful difference for people who use inhalers is the addition of a spacer. A spacer is an easy, effective tool that can support better inhaler technique. It helps more of the medication reach the lungs, where it can do its job, while reducing the amount that settles in the back of the throat, which may help cut down on potential side effects.

“About ten years ago, a respiratory therapist introduced me to a spacer,” Trish explains. “I was shocked by how much it improved things. The change was immediate — like night and day.”
